Bird Flu Avian Influenza H5

Lisle, IL – Bird Flu (Avian Influenza H5) is spreading across the United States and has been positively identified in multiple bird species in Illinois. In addition, there have been recent outbreaks identified in poultry & dairy cows and positive human cases in dairy & poultry workers.

While the current public health risk is low, the DuPage County Health Department, Illinois Department of Natural Resources, Forest Preserve District of DuPage County, and other local & state partners are closely monitoring the situation.

Below are some helpful facts, tips, and resources:

  • H5 bird flu is widespread in wild birds worldwide
  • Do not handle or attempt to capture waterfowl or other wild birds displaying signs of illness
  • Dogs and other pets should be kept away from the carcasses of birds that may have died from bird flu
  • If bird carcasses need to be disposed of, following guidance from the Illinois Department of Public Health
  • Report concentrations of five or more deceased birds found at one location to Illinois Department of Natural Resources wildlife biologists
