60 Teens Participate in Park District Overnight Ski TripTeens

60 teens departed from the Lisle Park District Community Center at 6:30pm on Fri., Feb. 6 for the annual overnight ski and snowboarding trip to Chestnut Mountain in Galena.  19 teens from the Lisle Park District and 41 participants from the Woodridge, Downers Grove, Winfield and LaGrange Park Districts joined 867 other avid teen skiers and snowboarders from park districts all over Illinois.

The Illinois Park and Recreation Association (IPRA) works with Chestnut Mountain to organize the trip each year. “This is the first year that the Lisle Park District has offered this trip to our residents, and we had a great response.” said Mike Gianatasio, recreation supervisor for the Lisle Park District. Gianatasio hopes that the program will continue to grow and attract more participants each year.

The ski and snowboarding trip is a statewide activity open to all recreation agencies in Illinois. Groups bring participants between the ages of 11-19 years old. At midnight, Chestnut Mountain is closed to the public and the 140 acres overlooking the Mississippi River are only available to park district participants. Chestnut Mountain’s terrain is geared for all levels of skiers and boarders. They have a 475-foot vertical drop that spans for 3,500 feet through 19 different runs, ranging from novice to black diamond.   Lisle Park District participants left Chestnut Mountain at 4:30am on Sat., Feb. 7 and returned to the Lisle Park District Community Center at 7:30am.

“The next thing we have planned is a snow tubing trip to Villa Olivia in Bartlett,” said Gianatasio.  The trip is scheduled for Fri., Feb. 27, but participants need to register by Feb. 20.  The cost is $25 for Lisle Par k District residents and includes tube rental, lift ticket and transportation. The trip is open to teens in grades 6-12.
